We watched the documentary Imelda by Ramona S. Diaz which was released in 2003.
The film began with her childhood in Tacloban, then went on to her youth in
Manila, Her marriage to Ferdinand Marcos, her rule under Martial Law, their
exile and until the time she returned in the Philippines. It is a documentary
full of interviews of Imelda as well as other people related to her.
I
really see her as insane. Her opinions and statements in the film are all very
hilarious. Also, it also made me mad to see all the jewelries, shoes and wealth
that they acquired during the Marcoses’ rule. The money that should be for the
poor Filipinos during that time mostly went to their luxuries and wants. Imelda
also keeps on saying that there were no human rights abuses in the country during
her time, but in fact it was so rampant then. She also justified her
extravagant clothing and love for shoes by saying that doing so inspires the
poor people to dress better and well, just like her. Looking at her and hearing
her statements makes me believe that she is indeed insane.
The
documentary showed a lot of insights not only from Imelda Marcos but also from
other people, like her daughter and also other people not related to her. It
also showed what she was currently doing back then (back in 2003). We can also
see that the Marcoses still have many supporters even though most of the
Filipino people denounced them and had them removed from the country.
I
learned a lot from the documentary. I learned a lot about Imelda’s life, before
she became the first lady and after she was exiled. I learned and was able to
hear her side, though it really is not that credible and important but it is important
to hear the side of both the masses and the Marcoses to understand it better.
